We all felt a bit sad leaving the Chateau - it is an exceptional place with wonderful people. David was a fine host and sent us off with 4 sandwiches, his father- 80years active & sharp - drove us to Gondrexange - fast! It was a pleasure to meet the man the authors of our two reference books had spoken so highly of. In Gondrexange we supplemented our sandwiches with chocolate filled pâté rise and set off. The group was rested and we moved along well. First along the canal then veering off and following lightly used country roads . There was less then a km of brush to push through. Clearly as we moved east we were gaining altitude-the downhills to the towns were not as much as the uphills heading out. When we entered woods coniferous trees appeared for the first tune and began to predominate. By the time we entered the picturesque town of Saint Quiren the landscape was much like that of cascade mountain foothills back home. The town was unique however with bulbous church towers very different from anything previously. inside there was a beautiful glass chandelier . We found an open cafe where we had drinks and dessert. We climbed the forest road out of town then onto steep trail. At a junction we left the GR and descended a "shortcut" trail which took us to Lenderman and the GR coming back out of Abressvillers which we followed to the highway, turned right and after ~ 1.5 km arrived at our Auberge BelAire.
It had family size accommodations which worked for us well. If it were just the two of us, staying in Abressvillers would make more sense we would have stayed on route. We had an Alsatian dinner selection and ice cream dessert. Everyone was satisfied!
