We bid our gracious in interesting hosts adieu and set out into an absolute downpour which abated rather quickly. As it was very warm - 71F or so eventually and humidity of at least 90%- I was soon into shorts and a light shirt. It was a day through the usual intense green pastoral landscape we'd experienced over the last many days. We finally stopped at another castle - Amerogen- this one had been occupied in the 1700s by a matron who wrote profusely and this legacy was used to create a professionally produced multimedia reenactment which played on the walls of the house. The characters were richly portrayed and the authentic dialogue made the experience remarkable as educational.
We left the castle after two hours and made good time to Utrecht but not without a solid rain as we approached the town. Utrecht is one of the older towns in Holland with evidence of prehistoric habitation before the Romans establish a frontier outpost therein about 50ish AD. After the Romans left the wasn't much until 700's AD. The old part of town features a canal - probably a moat remnant around which there is a rich cultural life, ancient buildings, a massive cathedral and our B &B which Tammy has mentioned - a remodeled upscale cave beneath the streets opening onto the canal.
