We left Haarlem today on a cool after a night of thunderless lightning.
We had perfect weather the day prior to rent bikes and casually ride through the landscape - a vast checkerboard of tulips in bloom. It was our first riding and it proved easier then anticipated. The biking infrastructure the same as for cars - separate lanes - separate stoplights which even countdown till changing. You do have to be alert to motorscooters which share the paths.
And the bikes are a working machine - not just for commuters but to haul purchases, move produce, kids etc. The usual bike has upright bars and balloon tires - rarely the mountain or road bikes we see in the states. The come in every conceivable modification and decoration. I'll never forget the quick glance at a curly blond haired boy smiling as he stood on the bar above the crank between moms knees as they whizzed by.
We visited the famous Kukenhof gardens - 85 acres of bulbs in full bloom.
The day was perfect.
Tomorrow the bike tour begins.
