Cinco de Mayo! But also a big holiday in Holland! Every year freedom of the country with the expulsion of the Nazi's on May 5, 1945 is celebrated with flags on most homes, flowers placed at memorials, and of course with big parties! We saw our first evidence of the war today passing old pill boxes - one had a tank turret mounted on it.
Another cool and by days end cold 30 mile ride through intensely green rural landscapes. Beautiful thatched roof farm houses, poles setup for nesting storks, huge draft horses and of course cattle of every sort all drifted by as we pedaled down endless dikes. We had lunch in a cafe in the base of a windmill - biefburgers tasted a bit like spicy breakfast sausage - quite good.
We arrived at our B&B just as the rain started. Our host was great to talk with and his son lives in Portland. It turns out he is an avid walker and had walked GR routes in the past. So after a nice long chat, we cleaned up and had a walk around our town Deventer.
Like Zwolle where we stayed the night before, this is a old historic moated town once part in the Hanseatc League. The Dutch have a way of tastefully blending new architecture with the very old.
