We fell so in love with the countryside today; the cool misty air and the unfamiliar concert of the birdsong stilled our chatter and then the tour of the farmhouses began! Magic!
At one point on the journey the path abruptly ended at the edge of one of the ubiquitous canals. After looking about we sorted it out- ring the bell and the ferryman comes to pull you across! This fellow came out in a tweed cardigan and a great red scarf. He was probably in his late 60's but also one of those ageless souls and easily and smoothly made the crossing while satisfying his curiosity about us and our journey. Farther on down the lane we overtook the happiest dog in the world carrying his master's fullsize umbrella.
We stopped for lunch and had our first pannekoeken- this is a thick crepe with toppings-we had ham and cheese. Traditionally it is topped with a syrup and powdered sugar and may be rolled up and eaten. I wasn't sure the combination of flavors would taste okay but they did- and we agreed to try a few more later on down the road.
Geithorn is an impossibly perfect neighborhood but with canals and boats and swans; it is quite the destination and there were visitors there from around the world. To return to Zwolle, we had to put the bikes on the train- not an entirely stress free activity, but it was quickly over and we were fine except for feeling ravenous. Dinner was Dutch interpreted Chinese- and piles of it! Finally, back at our favorite room so far, bellies full and sipping tonic water, we slide into the sweet fatigue of the adventurer...
