6/9 Diekirch to Beaufort

Another relatively short crisp mostly sunny sky would summarize this day. We left the hotel still full after the previous nights indulgence but did pick up some sandwiches at the Patisserie before heading out. We crossed the bridge over the river Sure and immediately followed along the river beside a busy caravan park back to Gilsdorf where we picked up the route and started climbing the hill above town. An old couple were sitting on their deck in the sunshine and yelled Dutch? No American I replied and the became very animated pointing out the route. You gain the ridge which has interesting sandstone formations and walk a good ways in pleasant forest then along open fields with far views. A short break and then we plunged downhill only to climb again sharply up the opposite side reaching a road where a biking event was in progress with riders bombing downhill by us following only to climb again after reaching a small city . As big climb which reached a plateau and many wheat fields. We noticed a little side corridor off the road which had a religious shrine dedicated to WW2 resistance fighters- in the middle of nowhere candles were burning. The road enter forest then exited. We finally sat down on the edge of a field to eat our sandwiches before reentering woods and then move steadily downhill finally reaching Beaufort. Tammy again snoozed while I looked around and finally talked for a good hour with our multilingual proprietor Julian. It was great to have an area person to bounce questions off of. Tammy appeared and we walked down to see the castle. We could only see the outer parts as a movie production was in progress. There was a lot of machine gun fire and explosions all afternoon - quite a racket! We later found out it is a production for a miniseries " Airforce One Is Down". We had dinner at the hotel which was full. Trout for me once again- nicely done - while Tammy had a salad with potatoes and pickled red cabbage. We enjoyed wine new to us -- Auxerrois -a regional wonderful white wine. We slept well in this walker friendly lodging - Hotel Auberge Rustique.
